plug & cutting 2019 | the conference

The Plug & Cutting Conference has been recognized for years as the leading educational opportunity for advancing and experienced growers. With extremely relevant, in-depth education on a variety of topics relating to plug and cutting production, growers are sure to come away with a fresh arsenal of best practices  and ideas to keep your facilities running both smoothly and profitably.

There are four key tracks at this year's conference:

  1. Plug & Cutting Principles
  2. Problem Management
  3. Production Input
  4. Technician (Presented in Spanish)

Don't miss these highlights from the tracks:

Plug & Cutting Principles
Success with Cuttings: From Cutting Arrival to Stage 4 of Propagation
Roberto Lopez, Ph.D, and Jason Twaddle

Learn how to improve your rooting success with annual and perennial cuttings with a better understanding of the ins and outs and common mistakes during rooting stages 0-4; from cutting arrival, storage, and handling to rooting, callusing, and toning.
See all Plug & Cutting Principles Sessions

Problem Management
Seedborne Problems in Annuals
Margery Daughtrey, Ph.D

Focusing on diseases known to have been introduced on seed in the past so that you can be alert to them while you are producing bedding plants. This talk will discuss fungal problems like Alternaria leaf spot, bacterial problems caused by Xanthomonas strains, and even viruses like Tobacco ringspot virus. Anticipation and prompt recognition are some of your best defenses against these otherwise surprise invaders.

Pesticide Recertification Credits

Several states have approved most, if not all, sessions as eligible for pesticide recertification credits. This is a continuous process, and we hope to continue adding states to this list. Please check back often to see if your state has approved any sessions for credits.

Plug & Cutting 2019 | production tour
Some of the best learning happens outside of a classroom. And getting up close and personal with the companies who are changing the way growing is happening can lead you straight to the better, smarter solutions faster than ever.

At Plug & Cutting 2019, we’re visiting two diverse and unique North Carolina greenhouses - Metrolina Greenhouses and Rockwell Farms.

Metrolina Greenhouses
Metrolina Greenhouses is a family-owned wholesale plant and services company. They are the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the United States with 162 acres under roof. In addition, they have approximately 15 acres of outdoor growing space (and still expanding!). Metrolina Greenhouses is one of the most automated greenhouses in the country using internally designed machines like automatic plant transplanters and mechanical shipping belts.

Rockwell Farms
Rockwell Farms is a family-owned and operated commercial greenhouse. With 36 acres of environmentally controlled greenhouse space, they are ranked the 45th largest grower in the United States and have been recognized by Greenhouse Grower Magazine as a Top 100 Grower in the United States. Rockwell Farms is a member of MPS, an environmental sustainability program for greenhouse growers, and has improved their environmental footprint by monitoring and reducing their use of water, energy, fertilizers, and crop protection agents.

Tour registration is limited, so don't wait too long before you make the decision of whether it's worth it (hint: it is).

Biocontrols for Propagators Workshop

Growers have learned that to grow a clean crop you have to start from the very beginning. This means deploying your biocontrol agents in the propagation stage. Attendees will learn what biocontrol agents can be used in young plants, what pests they control and learn firsthand how to apply them. Appropriate release techniques will be demonstrated. Packaging and storage of biocontrol agents will also be covered. (This session may qualify for Pesticide Re-certification)
