At Plug & Cutting 2019, we’re visiting two diverse and unique North Carolina greenhouses - Metrolina Greenhouses and Rockwell Farms.
Metrolina Greenhouses is a family-owned wholesale plant and services company. They are the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the United States with 162 acres under roof. In addition, they have approximately 15 acres of outdoor growing space (and still expanding!). Metrolina Greenhouses is one of the most automated greenhouses in the country using internally designed machines like automatic plant transplanters and mechanical shipping belts.
Rockwell Farms is a family-owned and operated commercial greenhouse. With 36 acres of environmentally controlled greenhouse space, they are ranked the 45th largest grower in the United States and have been recognized by Greenhouse Grower Magazine as a Top 100 Grower in the United States. Rockwell Farms is a member of MPS, an environmental sustainability program for greenhouse growers, and has improved their environmental footprint by monitoring and reducing their use of water, energy, fertilizers, and crop protection agents.
Please Note: The PRODUCTION TOUR IS SOLD OUT: To be added to the waiting list for this tour, please contact Amanda Holton at AmandaH@AmericanHort.org.
Growers have learned that to grow a clean crop you have to start from the very beginning. This means deploying your biocontrol agents in the propagation stage. Attendees will learn what biocontrol agents can be used in young plants, what pests they control and learn firsthand how to apply them. Appropriate release techniques will be demonstrated. Packaging and storage of biocontrol agents will also be covered. (This session may qualify for Pesticide Re-certification)
