Alicain Carlson, PhD – Syngenta Flowers

Dr. Alicain Carlson is a young mother holding her “dream job” as the technical manager at Syngenta Flowers where she manages a team of technical leads and horticultural scientists across the country and at two trial locations.
The daughter of an Army officer, Alicain grew up all over the United States and spent her high school years in Virginia. She attended Virginia Tech for her undergraduate studies and while a Hokie, she took a class on Indoor Plants and that sparked her love of Horticulture leading to her graduating with a degree in Biological Sciences. Before attending North Carolina State University for her graduate studies, Alicain worked on a cut flower farm which motivated her to study this in graduate school. She earned her Master of Science and PhD degrees in specialty cut flower production and postharvest. She stayed in North Carolina for post-doctoral work before joining Syngenta Flowers as a technical scientist in Gilroy, CA where she has worked for the past seven years.
She is co-author of a book on cut flowers post-harvest called “Postharvest Handling of cut flowers and Greens.” She’s received a variety of awards and recognitions including being named an AmericanHort HortScholar in 2008, is a member of the 2017 GPN 40 under 40 class, and a 2021 North Carolina State University Outstanding Young Alumni. She is a leader within both her company and the industry serving as vice president of All American Selections (AAS) and is a founding member of Syngenta Women in Flowers Team (SWiFT ERG), a recently formed employee resource group at Syngenta.
Alicain is a super-achiever in the industry and a person to watch as she continues to rise in her profession while balancing being a mom of two young children, daughter Caroline 3, and infant son, Doug. This past year, she returned home to Virginia to lead her team remotely and have the support of extended family as she and her husband raise their family. She is passionate about providing support to women so they can be productive both at work and at home. Join us we talk about how Alicain has learned to juggle life’s demands and how women can support each other while working to achieve both personal and professional success.
