Dr. Gerardo Spinelli
Production Horticulture Advisor, University of California Cooperative Extension – San Diego
Gerardo (Gerry) Spinelli is the new Production Horticulture Advisor serving the Nursery and Floriculture industry in San Diego. Gerry conducts applied research, extension, and education to improve viability and profitability of the Nursery and Floriculture industry, while conserving natural resources and complying with regulations. The Nursery and Floriculture industry in San Diego county is the first in California for volume of sales and the second in the US.
Gerry’s primary interests are irrigation management and water quality. These themes are a primary concern for growers given the high cost of water and the pressure from local and state water quality regulators. Nitrogen management is another of the advisor’s interests, given its strong relation to water management and its importance in the environmental impact of horticultural industry.

Heather Kase
Technical Sales Representative – Northeastern US, BioBee
Heather Kase is the Technical Sales Representative in the Northeastern United States for BioBee USA. Concurrently, she is a graduate student in the Master in Plant Health Management program at The Ohio State University. After graduating with her Bachelor’s of Environmental Biology from SUNY – ESF, she has worked in agroecosystems such as organic vegetable farms, indoor cannabis operations, high-density spindle apple orchards, and a military base research site. These past experiences focused Heather’s interests and career goals towards Integrated Pest Management, and she continues to cultivate her knowledge while encouraging others.

Dr. Margery Daughtrey
Senior Extension Associate – Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, Cornell University
Dr. Margery Daughtrey is a Senior Extension Associate with the Section of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology of Cornell University. She has conducted a research and extension program on the management of diseases of ornamental plants since 1978, at Cornell’s Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center in Riverhead, NY. She educates growers on management of greenhouse and nursery crop diseases, runs a diagnostic laboratory, and investigates controls for boxwood blight, impatiens downy mildew, and other terrible diseases. Daughtrey holds a B.S. degree in Biology from the College of William and Mary and an M.S. in Plant Pathology from the University of Massachusetts. She is a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society and coauthor of several books, including the Compendium of Bedding Plant Diseases and Pests.
